Pancreatic cancer awareness month was announced to help draw attention to a deadly disease. Pancreatic cancer doesn’t occur as often as cancer of the breast, however patients have very little chance at survival. Pancreatic cancer had been once thought to do its work in a hurry, but scientists have discovered the disease that Patrick Swayze passed away from this past year can take up to 15 years before creating into deadly tumors, which raises the importance of earlier diagnosis and treatment.
Cancer of the breast Consciousness Month by the figures
According to American Cancer Society estimates, in 2009 there were 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 62,280 early-stage breast cancer diagnosed in women. Of those, more than 40,000 were predicted to result in death. 2,000 men were diagnosed with cancer of the breast last year too. Of those, about 440 were predicted to die.
Things about breast cancer numerous think are true
- Underwire bras promote breast cancer growth
Many believe toxins build up because there is constricted breast tissue with underwire bras which is wrong. The truth, Dr. Deborah Axelrod tells CBS, is that no such link exists.
- Breast Cancer comes from deodorant
This is also false, says Dr. Schnabel. Studies do not have anything in them about breast cancer being linked to deodorant. It has not been proven.
- Don't drink from plastic water bottles. They trigger cancer
A link between plastic bottles and cancers is something many experts believe is there. Others doubt it just as much though. There has not been any connection between BPA (bisphenol) and cancer although many are concerned about its connection to cancer.
- Mammograms cause cancer of the breast
Dr. Schnabel tells Columbia Broadcasting System News the amount of radiation (.1 to .2 rads per picture) released in a mammogram is equal to or less than what a woman’s breasts are exposed to naturally over a three-month period.
- Lumpy breasts always mean greater risk
Lumpy breasts don't mean you'll get cancer, although it can make it harder to detect it. However, Dr. Axelrod advises that it is best to treat newly discovered breast lumps with caution and have a doctor investigate.
- No family history, no breast cancer
80 percent of breast cancer cases are sporadic, although it is possible to have it run within the family too.
