Green bean casserole formula made modern traditional

Since the 1960’s, green bean casserole has been a Thankgiving traditional. Since first introduced by Campbell's Soup company, the green bean casserole recipe has not changed much. You can get more flavor in a green bean casserole with just a few extra steps.

What to get for the green bean casserole recipe

From the start, the green bean casserole recipe had been an attempt to introduce richness. Green beans are often left with hardly any flavor when cooking them traditionally. Green bean casserole recipes add cream of mushroom soup for creaminess and french fried onions for crunch. The recipe is a classic. Many don't seem to want it anymore. Do you need to spice up your green bean casserole? How is it done? Easy — go back to the basics.

New and improved green bean casserole recipe

Instead of using the canned soup, make the dish from scratch. This could be made a day ahead of time, with minimal assembly; just re-heat it the next day. It is a really good choice. It is the savory meal you're looking for.

Every little thing for the recipe

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Half a diced yellow onion and half a sliced yellow onion
  • Dice one bell pepper
  • 1 clove garlic, diced
  • 1 pound cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Get some pepper. Put in 1 teaspoon of it
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • You'll need 1 ½ cups milk
  • You'll need sour cream. Get 1 cup of it
  • 1 – 1 1/2 lb French-cut green beans
  • You'll need parmesan cheese. Get 1 cup of it
  • You can choose your oil between canola, corn or vegetable. Get ½ cup of that

The method to follow

  1. You can do this in either a dutch oven or heavy-bottomed skillet. Heat butter at the bottom with medium heat.
  2. Until soft and smelling good, sauté the diced onions, bell peppers and garlic.
  3. Cook over medium heat after adding mushrooms, salt and pepper until you can't see liquid anymore.
  4. Sprinkle three Tablespoons flour over vegetables, stirring to coat.
  5. Add milk slowly, stirring continuously. Increase heat to medium-high and cook until thickened.
  6. Take the pan off of heat. Put the sour cream in. Put to the side. You'll leave it there for now.
  7. Put a large pot on the stove so you are able to boil water. Put ice water in a large bowl while the water is heating.
  8. Cook green beans in boiling water for three or four minutes or until bright green. Plunge beans immediately into cold water.
  9. The green beans have to get mixed with the sauce. Put the parmesan cheese in too.
  10. The sliced onion can be mixed with the flour that is left. There should be one tablespoon. Until fairly hot, heat oil in a heavy skillet.
  11. You'll want to fry the floured onions. The oil is for this. Top green beans with fried onions.
  12. Put the green bean casserole in an over at 350 degrees. Bake if for 30 to 45 minutes. If your oven is full, the mixture can be microwaved on medium-high.
