Japan and China quarrel over a lot of things, none so much lately as a small island chain within the South China Sea. The Japanese coast guard added fuel to the fire in September when it rammed and detained a Chinese fishing boat near the islands. The seizure of the Chinese boat further complicates already strained relations among the 2 countries as they position themselves to square off against each other at the Asia Pacific peak which starts Nov. 13. The Japan/China Senkaku argument
The territorial dispute in the South China Sea has intensified as China’s growing economic might has emboldened Beijing to increase pressure on Japan over the islands. The territory in question is known as the Senkaku Islands in Japan and the Diaoyu Islands in China. On September 7, two Japanese patrol ships hit a Chinese fishing vessel causing China-Japan relations to get really bad. Japan arrested the captain from China causing protests from Beijing that, even though Japan let the captain go, have continued. China just will not stand for Japan patrolling the island. They demand that Japan stop. Japan does not want to stop at all.
The movie of Japanese coast guard
The Senkaku/Diaoyu island dispute among Japan and China got even worse. The coast guard incident was leaked onto YouTube for anyone to see. The Japanese govt stopped the video as it didn't want the Japan-china Senkaku argument to get even worse. YouTube caught hold of it fairly fast. Nov 5 it got on the website. The movie of the collision and arrest made it out to the world. Japan then begun to broadcast it on Japanese TV over and over. Prosecutors have asked Google, which owns YouTube, to help them find out who uploaded the movie. Google said it would cooperate “within the legal scope” of the investigation.
The Asia-Pacific peak will choose
Nov 13-14, leaders from 21 countries in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum will get together ever since the South China Marine event has made relations between Japan and China so bad. More than half of the world's economic output is in this region which is why the economic growth being balanced in the region is the purpose of the Asia-Pacific summit. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan hopes to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao for bilateral talks in Yokohama. China is blaming Japan for creating tensions that rule out the talks. It is pointed out by Japanese analysts that Chinese citizens don't trust Japan at all. This is why it would be hard for China to cooperate with Japan without losing the citizens' trust.
