A toxin known to cause cancer has been found in the plain tap water of several cities nationally. The EWG released a research Monday that documents the presence of hexavalent chromium within the normal water of 31 locations. A total of 35 locations were tested overall. Within the movie "Erin Brockovich," hexavalent chromium, or chromium-6, was the contaminant that sparked the lawsuit against the public utility that was the subject of the film. What’s wrong with hexavalent chromium
Hexavalent chromium is dumped into the environment by steel and pulp mills, metal-plating and leather-tanning industries, based on the Environmental Working Group. Eroding soil causes this chemical to get into the water. And EWG paid labs to test 35 cities dirking water where the chemical is known to exist. Stomach cancer and chromium-6 have been found by An Environmental Working Group scientist to have a correlation. The highest levels of hexavalent chromium were found in Norman, Okla., Honolulu, Hawaii, Riverside, California, Madison, Wis., and San Jose, Calif.
The chromium-6 research
This is the 1st study of hexavalent chromium in water supplied to locations by the Environmental Working Group. The research went public only because the Environmental Protection Agency decided to try and cap the limit of chromium-6 released into water supplies. The National Institutes of Health classified hexavalent chromium as a possible reason for cancer back in 2008. In 2009, California proposed a safe limit of hexavalent chromium levels in normal water at 0.06 parts per billion. There is over 200 times the allowed limit already within the water when the EWG conducted their study. The limit California put on their water was exceeded in 25 of the 35 cities used for the research.
The Environmental Working Group recommends utilizing a reverse osmosis water filtering
Hexavalent chromium is the cancer-causing compound that starred within the film “Erin Brockovich.” Brockovich, a real person, successfully sued Pacific Gas and Electric for contaminating the water supply of Hinckley, Calif., with chromium 6. The award to Brockovich was over $330 million in damages. The EPA is trying to regulate hexavalent chromium, however until they actually do the Environmental Working Group recommends using water filtration systems to keep yourself safe. Water filtration systems such as reverse osmosis will remove heavy metals for instance chromium. For a reverse osmosis water filtration you will pay around $120 to $300.
