The U.S. has largely been shielded from terrorism since the ordeal of 9/11, however that does not mean terrorists did not have an eye on the salad bar at your preferred restaurant. Reports indicate that a key United States intelligence source has labeled the threat of terrorists poisoning buffets as “credible”. This potential gastronomic sabotage has the food industry seeking to beef up security.

Terrorism on buffets a genuine thing to fear

The Food and Drug Administration has met with the U.S. hotel and restaurant community to discuss the danger of buffets and other foods being poisoned, As outlined by the Department of Homeland Security. Taking nothing for granted and erring on the side of caution, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano has pronounced that her organization “operates under the premise that individuals prepared to carry out terrorist acts are in this country.”

Operation Hemorrhage: possibly using cyanide and ricin

Earlier within the year there was a plan uncovered, however luckily stopped according to CBS News. Various salad bars were reported to be targeted by al Qaeda through the usage of cyanide and ricin.
